Teaching Blues to Develop Creativity and Hand Independence
About 6 years ago I started teaching more blues in my studio. At the time, | had no idea how beneficial it would be - and in ways I never expected. I've shared bits and pieces of what | do over the years, but in this issue, I share part one of the first half dozen or so pieces | teach all my students. Not only has this developed hand independence, but it has been a great jumping off point for improvising and creativity. And my teens and older students love it because they are able to sound good long before their reading skills have developed giving them the confidence and encouragement to stick with lessons when they might otherwise want to quit. You can learn more when you read Teaching Blues to Develop Creativity and Hand Independence.
Play to Learn: Let's Play!
Michael Katz has more to share in his column Play to Learn: Let's Play! I'm not sure how he does it, but he seems to always provide me the inspiration and ideas for something I am working on when he sends me his column each month - and this month is no different. Be sure to give his ideas a test drive each month, you won't regret it!
10 Blogs to Read Over Your Holiday Break
With the close of the year, I have found myself reflecting quite a bit on the things I am thankful for. As a teacher, I am definitely thankful for all the piano teacher/bloggers out there. I have been working on some non-piano projects lately including learning more about blogging. There is so much more to blogging than just writing posts. I have an even deeper respect for the work of the bloggers out there that make teaching a tiny bit easier due to the work they do. I decided recently, to spend some time looking for new piano blogs and I share those I found in 10 Blogs to Read Over Your Holiday Break. I hope you find something worth reading and/or following in this list. My blog list has definitely grown!
It Started with an Email...
Speaking of blogs, a number of years ago I became aware of Sarah Lyngra and her blog and website. A few weeks ago I got an email from Sarah (it may have been a blog post) where she shared a couple of ideas from a book she recently listened to Dare to Lead by Brene Brown. Her email piqued my interest enough that I started researching in order to learn more. I am still going through the book, but | learned so much from various videos I found online that will definitely impact my teaching going forward. You can learn more when you read It Started with an Email...
