4 Music Arranging Ideas You Can Use with Your Students
I love this time of year because as we work on more Christmas carols and other holiday music, my students get more excited about practicing. It's always a fun time of year! I like to have my more advanced students work on their own arrangements of Christmas carols and I have a few new ideas to add to what I usually do thanks to Phil Hamm (on the cover). This month Phil shares 4 Music Arranging Ideas You Can Use with Your Students. If you aren't familiar with Phil, he has a number of books and pieces published on a number of different websites. You can learn more about where you can find his music (including some Christmas arrangements should you still be looking for something new this year) when you read his article.
Speaking Musically: Experimenting with Phrasing
Michael Katz shares some tracks and a rhythm chart so you and your students can explore musical phrasing in his column Play to Learn: Let's Play!
Since I Started Teaching Reading Rhythm This Way, Everything Has Changed
Around this time of year, my new students are starting to run into dotted quarter notes and eighth notes with more frequency. For years I had difficulty teaching my students how to count these notes. Then about 3 years ago, an idea came to me. I may not be the only teacher who teaches reading rhythm this way, but for me, it has changed everything. I rarely if ever have a student these days that doesn't pick up counting these rhythms easily and quickly. I share how I teach reading rhythm now in Since I Started Teaching Rhythm This Way, Everything Has Changed. Best of all, the only tool I need is a whiteboard app.
Achoo! Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season
While this time of year brings a lot of happy times, it is also the beginning of cold and flu season in the northern hemisphere. Even though I work with about 90 preschoolers and 40 piano students each week, I have found some things that usually allow me to stay healthy (even after I've had a 2 year old accidentally sneeze in my face!) If you want to find out my secrets to staying healthy read Achoo! Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season.
