- I love this time of year because as we work on more Christmas carols and other holiday music, my students get more excited about practicing. It's always a fun time of year! - Around this time of year, my new students are starting to run into dotted quarter notes and eighth notes with more frequency. For years I had difficulty teaching my students how to count these notes. Then about 3 years ago, an idea came to me. I may not be the only teacher who teaches reading rhythm this way, but for me, it has changed everything. I rarely if ever have a student these days that doesn't pick up counting these rhythms easily and quickly.
