About Spiritual Life

We certainly live in challenging times. Our entire planet is embroiled in a dire battle between good and evil, light and darkness. And the forces of darkness seem to get stronger every day (just watch any mainstream news outlet).

Yet, strange as it may at first seem, it is here in this physical world that the greatest spiritual progress can be made.

People like us, who have chosen to incarnate on Earth at this time and who choose to serve the Light, have been given an extraordinary spiritual opportunity, but also one fraught with spiritual peril.

The very fact that you’re here, now proves that you’re a great soul who wants to take every advantage of the precious gift of a human body.

I honor and commend you for your courage.

I’m Nayaswami Kamala (founder and creator of Spiritual Life Magazine).

It’s good to have you here.

The Spiritual Journey

We are truth seekers.

The whole journey is toward the truth, or toward God or our higher Self, and freedom.

We seek the reality beyond ordinary outward appearances, beyond the material into the world of spirit and meaning.

All my life, I’ve wrestled with the age-old questions:

That can get pretty deep.

And in Spiritual Life Magazine, we endeavor to clarify abstract philosophical concepts and turn them towards valuable strategies you can actually use.

Our Contributors

One of the things readers let me know is how much they enjoy and learn from our wonderful writers and contributors.

Their knowledge is both learned and experienced … and they’re often taking readers well outside mainstream thought.

Our community of readers and writers prefers thought leadership to trend-spotting, and I’m sure you will too.

I am honored and grateful to be part of such an exceptional team.

Spiritual Journey—Universal, Yet Individual

The spiritual journey is a universal human experience like getting hungry or falling in love. And yet it’s also intensely personal and unique to each individual.

Perhaps you’re just starting to explore your spirituality and are looking for some direction and guidance;

or perhaps you’ve been practicing for awhile and are looking for fresh ideas and inspiration;

or maybe you just want to be happier (don’t we all?) …

No matter what you’ve been through or where you are now, the wisdom and insights within Spiritual Life Magazine will help you live a more aware, conscious and fulfilling life.

My Journey

Now, I’ll share a little bit about my own journey and how I was led to wanting to help you with yours.

When I was six years old, I went next door to see what our new neighbor was up to.

He was trying to fix the sprinkler.

I looked at it and told him what was wrong.

Thus the first recorded family story of my passion for helping people and solving problems.

Here’s something else unusual about me.

As long as I can remember I’ve wanted to go to work.

Other girls wanted money, clothes, boyfriends—all those normal things.

But I was happiest creating something, solving challenging problems.

After I graduated from university, I started a long career path in computer programming and later web development.

I made good money. But that wasn’t why I worked. I worked for the love of it.

I acquired everything I ever thought I wanted—a fun, interesting job, a good husband, a nice house.

And yet it wasn’t enough. I longed for something more.

I was deeply unhappy and crying out. But no one understood.

I didn’t know it yet, but I was searching for meaning to my life.

Looking at the awesome stars or a beautiful rose, I just knew there had to be some intelligent consciousness behind creation.

I couldn’t accept a random, chaotic, meaningless universe.

So I embarked on the spiritual quest in earnest.

And by the grace of God, I discovered a teaching that spoke both to my scientific nature and to the natural joy of my heart.

We’re Called to Share

There comes a time on all journeys when we’re called to share, to help, mentor, teach others.

You know how when you’ve seen a really good movie, you want to tell all your friends, maybe Tweet or share on FB. Isn’t it so?

Well, people like us naturally love to share and help others.

Moreover, sharing my love of the spiritual life is one way of paying back all the blessings I have received and of helping to make the world a better place.

How I Became an Indie Magazine Publisher

Many years ago, I started blogs on the spiritual life.

But I grew fed up with the wafer thin, trendy stuff all over the Internet. I wanted to offer higher quality, more valuable content for my readers—something different.

I wanted to create work for people who care, that would matter to them, that they could actually use to make a difference in their lives.

So when the opportunity to become an indie magazine publisher appeared, I leapt at the chance.

I have always read magazines. And one thing I especially love about the medium is the beautiful layouts.

For me, beauty is an important part of spirituality.

We are visual creatures and, illustratively, an image of stillness in nature goes straight to your heart and awakens a feeling of peace more direct and powerful than words ever can.

Thus, a large part of the inspiration you’ll feel in Spiritual Life Magazine is invoked by the gorgeous images and art.

There’s much more, but I’ll write that some other time.

Intentionally Small

As an indie publisher, we’ve chosen to keep our company intentionally small. There’s no large, faceless corporation.

We believe “small” is a key to serving and mattering in a world of noise and distractions.

To have the freedom to do something that matters.

To create a meaningful impact in the world; even if that impact is tiny.

We’re okay with small.

Helping people makes me happy. People who value the spiritual life and want practical wisdom, strategies and inspiration they can actually use to be happier, and feel more peace, love and joy.

… not the majority who just want to flip through throw-away ideas, yet never do anything meaningful.

I passionately love sharing about the spiritual life.

I wake up every day, excited with the possibilities of helping others live a practical spiritual life.

My work is my service to God and Guru, to the Light.

That’s me helping out in the community organic garden.

Spiritual Roots

I want to tell you a little bit about the source of most of the teachings in Spiritual Life Magazine because so much of the spiritual advice these days has been filtered through the consciousness of a lower age. And as a result, the original, true wisdom has been misunderstood, distorted even contradicted.

It can be rather overwhelming.

Some recommended practices are even dangerous.

I didn’t invent these teaching. I am not a genius or big thinker or guru or enlightened being.

I am a disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the best-selling, spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi.

Every good thing I know and experience comes from him.

Spiritual Life Magazine’s spiritual roots are India’s ancient science of Raja Yoga, a comprehensive way of life and philosophy that offers techniques and devotional practices for spiritual awakening.

Raja Yoga is non-sectarian, non-denominational and applicable to any truth seeker. We welcome seekers from all traditions, or without a tradition, knowing that all true paths lead to the One. People like us are less interested in differences and more into exploring the eternal truths that underlie all religions.

The emphasis is on the practical—incorporating spirituality into daily life.

There’s so much to spiritual life; I hardly know where to begin! So I share what I particularly love, find inspiring, joyful and helpful.

There is much, much more for you to discover if you are interested.

It’s a joy to share.

These teachings have helped me tremendously on my own journey. And I trust you’ll find them inspiring too.

No matter what you’ve been through or where you are now, you can choose to change, spark a new journey, or enhance the one you’re already on.

We’re the magazine dedicated to your ever-deepening and evolving Spiritual Life.

May the Divine light awaken and purify our hearts and bring enlightenment to all beings.

Love and many blessings,
Kamala

Founder and Publisher, Spiritual Life Magazine

P.S. You may be wondering about my “weird” name.

My legal, birth name is Linda Lockhart.

Nayaswami Kamala is my spiritual name.

Nayaswami is a title which means “New” Swami in Sanskrit. Kamala means lotus—the blissful thousand-petaled lotus of the crown chakra.

The Nayaswami order is a new expression of the ancient Swami Order—more appropriate for our new age of higher consciousness, especially for women and couples.

A few people, especially in India, call me Swamiji. But we’re rather informal here in the USA, so just call me Kamala. ?
